Kingswood Celebrating 15 Years
An article from "The Post Star"
newspaper, June 23rd 2006
When 63-year-old Glens Falls native
Mike Woodbury decided to design Kingswood Golf Club in Hudson
Falls nearly 17 years ago, there weren’t that many golf courses
around. There were courses in Queensbury and Glens Falls,
but nothing else for miles.
“There was a need for more,”
Woodbury said.
Using his degree in architecture
from Cornell, he designed the 18-hole, 6571-yard course. A
student of the game for 40 years, designing a course came
natural to Woodbury…”
By December of 1989, construction
had already begun and in June of 1991, it officially opened.
Today, Kingswood is one of the most
established courses in the area.
“Sometime ago, we had the New York
State Women’s Amateur Tournament here,” Woodbury said.
“The North Atlantic Tour used to stop here, local pros have
played here…”
And on Saturday and Sunday,
Woodbury, along with lifetime members, will celebrate
Kingswood’s 15th anniversary.
Through those 15 years of operation,
Kingswood has survived the growth of more golf courses.
“ I think 19 more have been built
up. It’s been a challenge. It’s cutting the pie,”
Woodbury said.
But it’s the environment at
Kingswood that has kept the place afloat.
“What I hear most is how
friendly our staff is,” Woodbury said. “ I want people to
have a good time.”
