Kingswood Golf
Club
An article from "The Insider's Guide to the
Adirondacks"
“ You are in for a real surprise if
you venture out of the Park a few extra miles to this gem of a
public course. About a 20-minute drive from Lake George,
Kingswood is definitely worth the trip. The course was the
brainchild of Michael Woodbury (whose family owned the Woodbury
Lumber chain of stores in the Northeast ) who designed and had
Kingswood built to be ready for play in June 1992. Since then,
it has been drawing a growing legion of players who appreciate
the meticulous grooming of the bent grass fairways and greens,
the interesting variety of holes that require both finesse and
power, and the terrific views of both the southwestern
Adirondacks and the Green Mountains of Vermont.
Kingswood has achieved an impressive
balance of fun and challenge, along with the rewards of playing
a well - conditioned golf course. Right out of the blocks, your
tee shot on the 501 - yard par 5 No. 1 tempts you to cut the
corner of the pond in order to reach the green in two. Your
first tee shot of the day could very well determine how the day
is going to go here. The 518 - yard par 5 No. 5 is a real
beauty, with solid woods along the right, a gully to clear off
the tee, strands of trees along the left, and a sprinkling of
bunkers surrounding the green.
One thing that makes Kingswood so
much fun is that you can hit your driver most of the day, with
generous fairways encouraging you to swing away. There is quite
a bit of length here, too, with a third of the course made up of
par 4s that exceed 400 yards from the “blues.” Certainly the
prettiest, if not the toughest hole, is the 17th. It is a
relatively short but tight par 4 of 374 yards, beautifully
framed by tall pines, with a few left out near the fairway to
stand sentry for approaching shots. You get to finish your
round with a dogleg - left par 5 of 506 yards, providing you
with an ego-boosting chance at a birdie or a (relatively) easy
par.
Afterward, enjoy the view from the
second - level deck as you recount your strokes and your
pleasant memories of the day.
Kingswood has become quite a popular
course, so make sure to call ahead to reserve a tee time.”
